Silicone sealant is famous for sticking to almost anything — glass, ceramic, metal, wood, masonry — but there are a handful of materials where it simply refuses to form a lasting bond. If you have ever watched a silicone bead peel away from a freshly sealed joint, or wondered why your repair fell apart hours after application, the culprit is almost always one of these non-stick surfaces. Knowing what silicone will not stick to (and why) saves time, money, and a lot of frustration on the job.

Why Silicone Refuses to Stick to Some Surfaces

Silicone adhesion is fundamentally about how well the wet sealant can wet out, penetrate, and chemically grip a surface. When the surface energy is too low, or the surface is contaminated, the silicone cannot form the intimate molecular contact required for a strong bond.

The Chemistry Behind Poor Adhesion

Most acetoxy silicone sealants and neutral cure silicones cure by reacting with atmospheric moisture and form chemical links with surfaces that have polar or reactive sites. Materials that are chemically inert — meaning they have no reactive groups — give the silicone nothing to grab onto. The result is a purely mechanical hold, often too weak to withstand any real stress.

Surface Energy Matters

High surface energy materials (glass, clean metals, concrete) attract and hold the wet silicone like a magnet. Low surface energy materials (plastics like polyethylene, PTFE, and similar) cause the silicone to bead up and resist spreading, leaving tiny voids in the bond line that become failure points.

Common Materials Silicone Will Not Stick To

Here are the materials most likely to give you trouble when sealing with silicone:

Polyethylene (PE) and Polypropylene (PP)

These two plastics are used in everything from food containers to drainage pipes and chemical tanks. They have extremely low surface energy and almost no reactive sites for silicone to bond to. Even after abrasion or solvent cleaning, silicone typically only achieves a weak, easily peeled bond.

PTFE (Teflon) and Similar Fluoropolymers

PTFE is the classic non-stick material — so much so that it is used as the benchmark for low adhesion. It is intentionally designed to resist bonding with anything, including silicone. If you are trying to seal a PTFE-lined tank or a Teflon-coated thread, plan on using a mechanical seal instead.

Silicone Itself

Cured silicone does not bond to fresh silicone of the same chemistry without a special primer. If you try to apply a new bead over old silicone, the new layer will sit on top but easily peel off. Always strip old silicone completely before resealing, or use a silicone-specific primer designed for overcoating.

Oily, Greasy, or Wax-Coated Surfaces

Any film of oil, grease, mould release agent, or wax will block silicone adhesion. This is a common issue on metal parts straight from the factory, freshly machined components, or wood treated with oily finishes. Thorough degreasing with isopropyl alcohol or acetone is essential before applying silicone.

How to Bond Silicone to Difficult Surfaces

If you absolutely must bond silicone to one of these materials, here are some proven techniques to improve adhesion:

  • Use a specialty primer: Silicone primers (such as SS-4155 or similar) are formulated to chemically modify low-energy surfaces and dramatically improve bond strength.
  • Switch sealant chemistry: Some construction adhesives are designed specifically for difficult plastics. A two-part silicone or a hybrid polymer may perform better than standard acetoxy silicone on PE, PP, or PTFE.
  • Mechanical keying: Roughen the surface with sandpaper, then clean off all dust. The increased surface area and micro-anchors give the sealant something physical to grip.

A light coat of mould release spray ensures the cured silicone peels away cleanly from the master pattern.

Silicone is a brilliant adhesive and sealant — but it has limits. Polyethylene, polypropylene, PTFE, cured silicone, and oily or waxed surfaces are the most common troublemakers. Identify the substrate before you start, prepare it properly, choose a primer or alternative sealant when needed, and you will get the durable, watertight seal silicone is famous for. For tough jobs where standard silicones struggle, switching to a compatible sealant chemistry is often the fastest path to a long-lasting bond.
