The success of any sealant project hinges on thorough preparation. Start by cleaning the joint area with a mild detergent and water to remove dust, grease, or old sealant residue. For stubborn contaminants, use a solvent like isopropyl alcohol or a specialized cleaner, ensuring it’s compatible with the glass and surrounding materials. Rinse thoroughly and dry the surface completely using a lint-free cloth or compressed air.
Next, assess the joint width and depth. For curved glass, joints are often narrower and more irregular than straight ones, requiring careful measurement. Use a flexible ruler or calipers to determine the average width and depth, ensuring they fall within the sealant manufacturer’s recommended range. If the joint is too shallow, widen it slightly with a rotary tool or sandpaper, taking care not to damage the glass.
Masking the adjacent surfaces is crucial for clean lines. Apply low-tack painter’s tape along both edges of the joint, leaving a small gap (typically 1-2mm) to accommodate the sealant. This prevents overspill and simplifies cleanup later. For highly curved sections, use shorter strips of tape and adjust their angle to conform to the glass’s contour.

Apply light pressure and work in one direction to avoid creating air pockets or uneven surfaces.

If any residue remains on the tape, use a clean cloth dampened with solvent to wipe it away before it dries.
Inspect the joint for gaps, bubbles, or uneven sections. If necessary, use a sharp knife or sealant remover tool to carefully cut away excess material and reapply sealant to the affected areas. For small imperfections, a cotton swab dipped in solvent can help blend the edges.
Allow the sealant to cure according to the manufacturer’s instructions, which typically range from 24 to 72 hours depending on temperature and humidity. Avoid disturbing the joint during this time, as movement can disrupt the curing process and weaken the bond. Once fully cured, test the joint by gently pressing on it—it should feel firm and resilient without any give.
Curved glass joints present unique challenges, such as uneven gaps or limited access. For tight corners, use a smaller nozzle or a sealant tube with a flexible tip to reach into crevices. If the joint is highly irregular, consider using a backer rod—a foam strip inserted into the gap to create a uniform surface for the sealant.
