Too thin, and the seal may fail under pressure or moisture exposure; too thick, and it risks cracking or taking too long to cure. Here’s how to balance precision with practicality.
Joint Size and Material Compatibility
The recommended thickness depends on the gap you’re sealing. For standard tile joints or gaps up to 6mm wide, aim for a uniform bead that fills the space completely without overflowing. In wider gaps (6–12mm), use a backer rod—a flexible foam strip—to create a base that prevents the sealant from sinking too deep. This ensures the material forms a proper surface bond while maintaining a consistent thickness of 3–5mm on top.
Surface Movement and Flexibility Requirements
Areas subject to vibration or temperature changes (like around shower doors or bathtub edges) need thicker sealant to accommodate movement. In these zones, apply a bead that’s slightly wider than the gap (e.g., 8–10mm for a 6mm gap) and shape it into a concave profile using a damp finger or tool.
